Husayni mourners from various nationalities gathered at Marble Arch on Friday morning. After performing the noon and afternoon prayers and reciting the Maqtal (narrative of martyrdom), they began their procession along one of the longest and most remarkable Ashura march routes in London.

The mourners, dressed in black and carrying flags and banners adorned with the names of Imam Husayn (a.s.), Abbas ibn Ali (a.s.), and the other martyrs of Karbala, marched from Oxford Street toward Downing Street. The resonance of Husayni elegies, lamentations, and the chants of “Labbayk Ya Husayn” and “Hayhat Minna adh-Dhillah” in central London displayed a magnificent manifestation of the devotion of the lovers of the AhlulBayt (a.s.) to the eternal epic of Karbala, drawing the attention of numerous citizens and tourists in the area.

Eulogists of the AhlulBayt (a.s.) recited elegies in Persian, Arabic, Urdu, and English along the route, and the mourners, through chest-beating, honored the memory of Imam Husayn (a.s.) and his loyal companions who sacrificed their lives to safeguard Islam, justice, and human dignity. The presence of Iranians, Iraqis, Afghans, Pakistanis, Lebanese, Bahrainis, and Shiites of other nationalities lent a transnational character to this ritual.

Despite linguistic and cultural differences, the participants gathered under the banner of Sayyed al-Shuhada (a.s.), demonstrating that the message of Ashura, after centuries, has transcended geographical boundaries and continues to unite the hearts of the free people of the world.

Speakers at the ceremony, elaborating on the dimensions of Imam Husayn’s (a.s.) uprising, described Ashura as the school of steadfastness against oppression and subjugation, stating that the cry of “Hayhat Minna adh-Dhillah” continues to inspire nations that have stood against occupation and tyranny.

The Ashura march in London is considered one of the most prominent Shiite mourning rituals in Europe due to its route through one of the busiest areas of the British capital and the participation of mourners from various nationalities, and it is held annually with particular order and grandeur.

According to this report, Husayni Ashura mourning ceremonies were held with the widespread participation of Shiites and devotees of the AhlulBayt (a.s.) in mosques, Husayniyyahs, and Takayas across British cities. Shiites and Husayni mourners residing in London gathered at the Islamic Centre of England on the day of Ashura, holding mourning ceremonies and elegy recitation, and performed the noon and afternoon prayers led by Hojat al-Islam Sayed Hashem Mousavi, the Imam of the Islamic Centre and the representative of the Supreme Leader in the United Kingdom.

Many Islamic centers, mosques, Husayniyyahs, Takayas, and some cultural centers in the United Kingdom have held special programs since the beginning of Muharram, including religious lectures, recitation of Ziyarat Ashura, chest-beating, elegy recitation, and distribution of votive food among Husayni mourners, hosting thousands of devotees of the Master of Martyrs on a daily basis.
