Ashura International Foundation / Husayni Mourning News:
Sweden is a country in northern Europe with a population of 10 million, of whom approximately 150,000 are Muslims, and between 30,000 and 60,000 of them are Shiites.
Most residents of Sweden come from various nationalities, including Iraqi, Iranian, Pakistani, and other countries. Upon arriving in Sweden, followers of the AhlulBayt (a.s.) began establishing and opening Islamic centers, holding Husayni gatherings, congregational prayers, Friday prayers, and building Husayniyyahs and mosques. The Imam Hadi (a.s.) Association, the Islamic Unity Association, and the Imam Hasan al-Mujtaba (a.s.) Association are among the Islamic centers in the city of Gothenburg, Sweden, which operate with the aim of disseminating Islamic and Shiite sciences and providing spiritual support to missionaries.
Sayyed al-Shuhada Husayniyyah
The Sayyed al-Shuhada Husayniyyah was established in the year 1426 AH (2005 AD) in the city of Gothenburg, Sweden, as a cultural-social association. This Husayniyyah carries out its activities by reviving religious occasions, commemorating the rituals of the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h.) and the AhlulBayt (a.s.), and participating in social activities.
The board of this Husayniyyah, on various religious occasions, hosts prominent scholars, intellectuals, and missionaries from Europe and other countries around the world to uphold Husayni rituals. The officials of this Husayniyyah have for the past five years continuously held courses for recitation of the Holy Quran and reflection upon this divine book. Holding special ceremonies during the months of Ramadan and Muharram, and on the births and martyrdom anniversaries of the Infallible Imams (a.s.), are among the religious activities of this Husayniyyah.
The Sayyed al-Shuhada Husayniyyah enjoys the support of a wide range of believers in Gothenburg across various age groups. Perhaps the greatest inclination of the officials of this Husayniyyah is toward supporting social activities and participation. Especially since the center of this Husayniyyah’s activities is in the Hammarkullen area, which attracts a high percentage of believing and Muslim families.
After Shiites were able to obtain an official license for the activities of this Husayniyyah from the Swedish government, they increased their activities, because with this license they freely exercise their rights.
The Shiites of Gothenburg aspire to expand the scope of attention to Quranic sciences, its recitation, and teaching, especially since an Islamic school is soon to be opened in this city.
The Sayyed al-Shuhada Husayniyyah, in agreement with the Al-Wala Islamic Center in Gothenburg, during the holy month of Ramadan in the year 1425 AH, organized a unified Eid al-Fitr prayer for all Shiites of the city—a commendable initiative by Shiite Islamic centers.
Gothenburg is the second largest city in Sweden and its industrial capital. The holding of the Eid al-Fitr prayer has become an annual tradition, respected by all Shiites of the city to manifest the slogan of monotheism in word and deed. This initiative has been met with a warm reception from believers who aspire to the unity and solidarity of Muslims.
