Hundreds of Shiites and devotees of the AhlulBayt (a.s.) from various nationalities gather every year on the night of Ashura at Islamic centers in New York and Washington, expressing their love and devotion to Imam Husayn (a.s.) and his companions through mourning ceremonies.

These ceremonies were attended by a number of diplomats and their families, as well as hundreds of Shiite residents of America from various countries around the world.

Islamic centers in New York and Washington take on a different atmosphere on Ashura, as devotees of the AhlulBayt (a.s.) travel from different states across America to participate in mourning rituals and benefit from the spiritual atmosphere of the month of Muharram.

The Ashura night mourning ceremonies at these centers featured recitation of Ziyarat, elegy recitation, religious speeches, and mourning rituals. Participants honored the martyrs of Karbala, emphasizing the messages of justice-seeking, freedom, and sacrifice of the Ashura movement.

The Ashura night ceremony was held just days after the streets of Manhattan, New York, hosted the annual “Husayn Day” ritual—a program that, with the widespread presence of Muslims and mourners from various nationalities, conveyed the message of the Ashura movement and the uprising of Imam Husayn (a.s.) to the public space of this metropolis.

In this ceremony, held in the heart of New York amidst the skyscrapers of Manhattan, participants organized mourning processions, held congregational prayers, and distributed brochures introducing the event of Karbala, conveying the message of justice-seeking, freedom, and human dignity of the Husayni movement to citizens and tourists.

The “Husayn Day” ritual has become one of the hallmark Muharram programs in New York in recent years, bringing together hundreds of Muslims and devotees of the AhlulBayt (a.s.) from various states and countries each year.
