A Russian journalist who traveled to Iraq to cover the Arbaeen pilgrimage of 1448 (2026) reported on the atmosphere of this year’s Arbaeen as follows:

“What stands out more than anything here is the revival of the Shiite culture of vengeance and the red flags that people say they have raised to avenge the blood of the son of Husayn and their supreme authority.”
