The Ashura International Foundation Education and Research Department: The extraordinary uprising and martyrdom of Imam Husayn (a.s.) and his companions has, throughout history, not only inspired countless struggles for justice but also raised profound questions for both scholars and the public. For this reason, numerous Muslim and non-Muslim intellectuals have sought to answer the questions of “what,” “how,” and “why” regarding the life and movement of Imam Husayn (a.s.).
Among such contemporary scholars is Dr. Chris Hewer from Ireland, a distinguished thinker with extensive experience in engagement with Muslims and a deep interest in the intellectual and ethical legacy of Imam Husayn (a.s.).
Since 1986, Dr. Hewer has been recognized as a leading figure in Christian-Muslim relations in his country, initially working at the Centre for the Study of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations in Birmingham, and later serving from 1999 to 2005 as Adviser on Inter-Faith Relations to the Bishop of Birmingham.
From 2006 to 2010, he was a member of St Ethelburga’s Centre for Reconciliation and Peace in London, where he connected with broad audiences through adult education courses, study days, and public dialogues. He currently continues teaching, research, and writing.
With a background in Christian theology, Islamic studies, and interfaith dialogue, Dr. Hewer has produced an extensive body of scholarly and intellectual work, including books, articles, and lectures, on Islam and Imam Husayn (a.s.).
“Husayn (a.s.) and the Struggle for Justice” is one of these significant contributions. Although authored by a non-Muslim, the book’s academic and substantive value led the Ashura International Foundation to publish it in French, Spanish, and Persian during the 2023 Arbaeen season. The original English edition was also republished by the Foundation.
This project was carried out with the support of the Al-Mustafa (p.b.u.h) International Research Institute and the Islamic Centre of England.
Following their distribution during the Arbaeen pilgrimage, the books were officially unveiled in March 2024 at the opening ceremony of the International Festival “Ana Min Husayn (a.s.)” in Tehran.
